Project details

Intro: We are inquisitive to know how self-promotion is conducted by everyday users online. This project serves as a starting point in that direction. Here we interviewed 10 Flickr users to understand:

  1. If they care about self-promotion?
  2. What are the strategies they use towards this goal on Flickr, to promote their photography?

Our interview protocol consisted of 11 open-ended questions that probed how users were introduced to Flickr, and how they use it for self-promotion. Interviews were transcribed into 103 pages of documents. For our data analysis, we identified common themes within the responses, with self-promotion as the underpinning element.

Participants:

Flickr Participants
  • 10 participants
  • 6 are female
  • Age: 27 to 55 years
  • None are professional photographers
  • Joined Flickr based on recommendations from friends
  • Most of their contacts are people they did not know face-to-face
  • They share artistic photos, rather than photos of family events; some are focused on certain genres
